The Batizado is a ceremony that gathers Capoeira students, mestres (masters) from different groups and family members.
It is the day that the Capoeira student receives their first grading and begins their true Capoieira life. The student is required to play with a graded and qualified Capoeirista, as the student tries to defend themselves. The game ends when the student is taken down – this is called the Batizado (the baptism). However, the graded Capoeirista may deem the take down unnecessary.
In the Batizado, the Troca de Cordão (change of belt) also takes place, where students are awarded their new gradings.
For a student receiving a more advanced grading, the game is played with more than one Capoeirista with higher grading.
